Trans fats are formed as a side product when vegetable oils are hydrogenated.

A high intake of trans fats is associated with various chronic diseases, such as abdominal obesity, inflammation and heart disease, to name a few.

In a series of clinical studies, people consuming trans fats instead of other fats or carbs experienced a significant increase in LDL (bad) cholesterol without a corresponding rise in HDL (good) cholesterol.
